Experiencing Liseli: Ahavah through the eyes of a volunteer
10 October 2024
I arrived at Liseli Farms on a small boat at about 21:30. What an experience it was to be greeted by the bright stars over the Zambezi River—what a way to start a trip! I stayed in a safari tent, and each morning, when I unzipped my tent, I saw the most amazing sunrises. The sound of birds and the wind in the morning accompanied me as I walked to get my first cup of coffee. Creation truly makes a beautiful sound.
The open hearts of the people of Liseli are what really made me feel at home there. I was so excited to visit Ahavah School because, before my trip to Zambia, I had heard so much about their vision for the school. They aim to serve the community in the area and follow God’s guidance. I walked to the school, beyond excited to meet the children. The sincere joy on their faces immediately melted my heart. I realized once again that this place is special.
We listened as the children worshiped the Lord with devotion. These children may be young, but we must not overlook them—they know and love the Lord. As 1 Timothy 4:12 (NIV) says, “Do not let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity.” This group of children definitely set an example of faith for me. God uses people regardless of their age; we just need to be willing to be used by Him.
It was also so much fun to be there during their break period. The children really inspired me to enjoy the little things in life, because isn’t that what life is all about—the special moments? A few of the boys and I threw a ball to each other for about 10 minutes, just playing and having fun. Then a few of the boys and girls bounced a ball to each other. It’s the simple things—being in the moment and enjoying where you are. Later, they all played a group activity in a circle. It was so much fun just being there and experiencing the dedication the teachers have to the school.
Walking back, my steps felt lighter, and I was smiling so big. Ahavah School made a big impact on me.
